GERMERSHEIM, Germany – “Our stock availability is at 92%,” Douglas Nomura, the Germersheim Central Distribution Center manager said. “With all the panic going on, we never panicked here, because we knew we had the supplies, we had the personnel."
“We are working closely with our area offices and commissaries on a daily basis, so we want to let the community know here in Europe that the distribution center is here to support you and we’re working around the clock to make sure that we can lean forward to support our troops, our retirees, and our family members.”
The Germersheim CDC provides all semi-perishable and commissary operating supplies to 33 commissaries, 26 U.S. Embassies and four Navy Exchange Marts across 10 countries in the European theater and Southwest Asia.
Not panicking and taking things slowly are the two key messages the staff responsible for delivering food, cleaning supplies and yes, toilet paper, want to express.
“We’re not going to run out of toilet paper, you can slow down a little bit,” Darryl Smith, the inbound section chief, said. “We’re going to get everything to you, we’re going to make sure we meet the mission because we have a workforce that’s willing to come in and support the troops and their families.”
With order sizes from the various commissaries nearly doubling over the past five days, the center has implemented a “two-down” system where shift managers and supervisors are returning to their old jobs to help pick products and fill orders.
“We have supervisors on forklift trucks and section chiefs on reach forklift trucks picking orders so that will be ready for delivery the next morning,” Smith said. “For locations in Germany, it’s same day delivery, and for some of the farther places in Europe, like Italy, it’s two days.”
In addition to the two-down system, the workforce has worked the extra hours to ensure all orders are met on schedule.
“We have an outstanding team; they’re all just totally dedicated,” Nomura said. “This past weekend we had a total of 60 volunteers come in on Saturday, and another 65 that came in on Sunday to ensure all store orders are picked and we can get our trucks out in a timely manner.”
“I feel outstanding about our workers,” Smith said. “They’ve stepped up to the plate by volunteering for overtime, our managers support the workers to come in, it’s been great. Everyone is doing a great job, and we’re meeting all the missions for the commissaries.”
