Sgt. 1 St Class George F. Gutierrez
FORT HUNTER LIGGETT, Ca. – Soldiers from the 311 th Sustainment Command
(Expeditionary) traveled to Fort Hunter Liggett for Extended Combat Training, which
served as their annual training, in preparation for deploying to the Middle East in
support of Operation Inherent Resolve, to answer the nation’s call, February 16-29,
2020.
“Over a long history of wars and contingency operations, as well as domestic
emergencies, the Soldiers of America’s Army Reserve have never failed to answer the
Nation’s call”, reads the 2019 Posture of the United States Army Reserve, America’s
Global Response Force.
“For us, it is all about sustainment,” said Brig. Gen. Dianne M. Del Rosso,
commanding general for the 311th ESC.
The 311th ESC will also deploy to the Middle East in support of Operations Spartan
Shield, Resolute Support and Freedom Sentinel, where it will assume responsibility for
providing sustainment support to units operating in the United States Central Command
area of operations.
Weapons Qualification
The “Log Warriors,” as the 311 th Soldiers are known, traveled from multiple states to
conduct range operations on weapons such as the Beretta M9 Pistol, the M4 carbine
and the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon.
All soldiers must qualify on their assigned weapons to facilitate the commander’s
evaluations of several individual tasks and integrated marksmanship skill performances,
and to provide unit readiness indicators.
“We zeroed and qualified on our assigned weapons,” said Sgt. Lesly R. Pineda, human
resources specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company. “We also
had to qualify at night and under a simulated chemical attack.”
HEAT
Furthermore, Soldiers trained on HEAT or Humvee Egress Assistance Trainer, Combat
Life Saving skills, and numerous battle drills.
HEAT was created as a lifesaving device that increases the likelihood of survival for
Soldiers involved in rollovers caused by an improvised explosive device (IED), caved
roads or impact from other vehicles.
“The HEAT training is very interactive and an eye opener,” said 1st. Lt. Khalil S. Jor’dan,
plans officer in the personnel section. “It was very useful and put things into
perspective.”
Command Post Exercise – putting it all to the test.
During the last week of training, the Soldiers participated in a Command Post Exercise.
“Brig. Gen. Del Rosso requested an outside evaluation and training to help shape and
prepare for their mobilization and a Command Post Exercise, said Lt. Col. Craig
Johnson, training and exercises officer in charge with the 1 st Theater Sustainment
Command.
The CPX simulates real world events the Soldiers may encounter while deployed
overseas.
“This training gives us an idea of what to expect and what our job will be while in
country,” said Sgt. 1st Class Pernell F. Mabry, platoon sergeant with the personnel
section.
“At the request and direction of Brig. Gen. Del Rosso we utilized real world data,” said
Johnson. “The 311 th ESC wanted to be familiarized with the area of responsibility early
on and based on the results of the CPX, we will utilize this for command post exercises
in the future.”
The United States Army Reserve continues to build, train, and sustain the most
capable, combat-ready and lethal Federal Reserve force in the history of the Nation.
