Huntsville, TX – U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Courtney Boston, the commanding officer of Recruiting Station Houston, was inducted into the Sam Houston State University Hall of Honor during a ceremony held at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, on Nov. 22, 2019.
The purpose of the ceremony was to celebrate seven former student athletes for their impact to the athletic program during and after their time at the university.
“For me personally, to be recognized remains to this date an unreal situation,” said Boston. I don’t see myself in that light at all, rather a simple guy who believes in being your best in everything you do. I never tracked my personal statistics or accomplishments. It was simply about winning. I absolutely hate losing, bottom line.”
Boston said that it meant everything to be recognized in front of his family and especially his children.
“The induction proves to them that hard work pays off and facilitates goal accomplishment,” he said.
Recalling his time at the university, Boston pointed to a world of new possibilities he encountered there.
“Being from a small town made the university lifestyle fun and adventurous,” he said. “It was a city within a city, filled with vibrancy and opportunity. I met and remain close friends with many of the students I encountered while on campus. It was an amazing experience.”
According to Boston, the coaches and staff at the university helped influence his path and provided him the tools to accomplish his goals. Particularly noted was Coach Curtis Collier, a retired Army Colonel, who was the track and field coach at the university during Boston’s tenure.
“He was my greatest influence and saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself,” he said. “He challenged me with the idea of serving my country and being a leader. Ultimately, I wanted something that would truly challenge me and I somehow knew that the Marine Corps would meet that need.”
Boston said he looks forward to continued opportunities to interact with the university and give back in any way that he can.
“While serving on active duty and being stationed all over, my interaction has not been what I would like it to be,” said Boston. “That’s why being stationed here in Houston is so amazing. The opportunity for me to interact at this point has increased tremendously.”
