200302-N-UA321-1002 CHESAPEAKE, Va. (Feb. 20, 2020) The Naval Support Activity (NSA) Hampton Roads-Northwest Annex (NWA) Galley recently received the five-star accreditation for maintaining the highest level in food service excellence.
“When I get the opportunity to come down here I am always impressed at the [Galley] team and all the hard work that is put in each and every day to provide exceptional service to the customers,” said Capt. Jonathan Kline, Commanding Officer of NSA Hampton Roads. “The pride that each team member takes in preparing, cooking and serving the food is truly remarkable.”
The five-star accreditation is based on the Galley’s score from an on-site assessment completed by Navy Region Mid-Atlantic (NRMA) on their overall food service quality. The categories on the assessment include accountability, subsistence management, sanitation, base operating support, facilities, and general performance.
“Your customers love what you do and you are taking great care of them,” said Bill Dorris, NRMA Galley Program Manager, during the five-star accreditation presentation. “It gives me a great source of pride to see this team receive this award.”
This is the second consecutive year that the NWA Galley has received the accreditation, in which they scored a 98 percent on the overall assessment.
“Getting this recognition is very humbling and rewarding,” said Chris Wiggs, Food Service Officer at the NWA Galley. “We have a great team here and everyone does a fantastic job working together to ensure that we satisfy each customer.”
A typical day at the Galley begins at 4:30 a.m. when the staff arrives and starts to prepare food for the breakfast rush, which begins at 6 a.m. After breakfast, they begin prepping for lunch and then eventually dinner, which normally ends at 5:30 p.m.
“We spend each day cooking and ensuring that the best quality food is on the line,” said Wiggs. “The staff does a great job with their attention to detail and they work very well together as a team.”
The NWA Galley provides meals to approximately 350 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen daily. They also have monthly special meals where Department of Defense Civilians have the opportunity to enjoy a delicious meal.
The next step for the NWA Galley is competing for the Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Award, which is the most coveted food service award that a Navy galley can receive. The Galley was nominated for the Ney Award in 2018.
