Dr. Vikram Deshpande, an engineering professor at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom—whose research has been supported by both the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and its international arm, ONR Global—recently received the 2020 Rodney Hill Prize in Solid Mechanics.

This prestigious award is given every four years and comes with a $25,000 prize. The 2020 award was announced by its joint sponsors—the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and Elsevier, a publisher of scientific books and journals.

Deshpande is being recognized for his seminal contributions to the field of mechanics of materials, ranging from the design of micro-architected materials to strategies for mitigating degradation of materials operating in extreme environments.

In his research, Deshpande combines deep theoretical understanding with insightful experiments to unravel the complex phenomena necessary to develop reliable design tools for the next generation of high-performance materials. His research output is prodigious, establishing him as a world-leading authority in the burgeoning area of microstructural mechanics.

Dr. Judah Goldwasser, ONR Global’s science director for materials science at the command’s London office, said: “Dr. Deshpande is an outstanding researcher, whose highly creative insights and analyses have led to substantial contributions to enable capability enhancements in areas of importance to the Naval Research Enterprise.”

The Rodney Hill Prize will be presented to Deshpande at the 2020 International Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, held Aug. 23-28 in Milan, Italy.

ONR Global sponsors scientific efforts outside of the U.S., working with scientists and partners worldwide to discover and advance naval capabilities.
