Two Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAGC) officers and one legalman assigned to Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota, Spain, earned Region Legal Service Office (RLSO) awards for fiscal year 2019.

Lt. Sterling Spencer, Trial Counsel, Lt. Savannah Smidt, civil law branch head, and Legalman 2nd Class Sampe Rumpak, command services paralegal; won Trial Counsel of the Year, Legal Assistance Attorney of the Year, and Sailor of the Year respectively.

The awards are given for exceptional performance of duties in their area of responsibility (AOR).

“It is humbling,” said Rumpak in regards to his Sailor of the Year award.

As for the other two recipients, Rumpak said it is “Well deserved. They are highly skilled and go above and beyond their basic required duties.”

In the NAVSTA Rota detachment office, the legal team deals with novel international issues, complex litigation across multiple continents, and a high operation tempo.

“There are a significant number of highly skilled JAG officers and legalmen stationed throughout the region, so it's an incredible accomplishment for the Rota detachment to receive three ‘of the year’ awards,” said Spencer. “I'm extremely proud of everyone's hard work and dedication to mission accomplishment.”

According to Spencer, in this region and area of practice, it takes a lot of effort, patience and clear communication for teams to perform well. RLSO detachment Rota has Sailors who are willing and more than capable of doing that.

”Seeing other members of my office receive awards makes me very proud,” said Smidt. “In my eyes, it means that everyone is fostering an environment that allows people to exceed expectations and I am happy to be a part of that.”

Keeping the customer first in their minds and communicating effectively within the legal detachment at NAVSTA Rota is part of their key to success.

“Communicating what is going on to our detachment and being as transparent as possible keeps everyone informed and allows them to bring issues to us so that we can fix them and continue to foster an environment of success,” said Smidt.

“I think we're lucky to have a great detachment,” said Spencer. “Everyone works together and although it's a lot of hard work, the people here make it interesting and easy because they do their jobs so well.”

The members of NAVSTA Rota’s detachment continue their commitment to excellence, helping the NAVSTA Rota community live their best lives while enjoying award-winning legal services at their home away from home.
