The 9th Medical Group is scheduled to launch a new electronic health record (EHR) called the Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS at Beale Air Force Base, June 20, 2020.

MHS GENESIS will replace select Department of Defense legacy systems that have been around since the late 1980s. These include AHLTA, the Composite Health Care System, and the Theater Medical Information Program-Joint portfolio.

“It will allow us to provide our Airmen the quality healthcare that they deserve,” said Capt. Faraz Ghoddusi, 9th MDG chief medical information officer. “By going with this civilian vendor we are continuing to modernize the way we do medicine, which will not only have a great impact behind the scenes but with direct patient interaction as well.”

This new system will provide a single record of care throughout a military member’s service. It will integrate inpatient and outpatient solutions that connect medical and dental information across the continuum of care, from point of change in health to the medical treatment facility. This includes garrison, operational and en route care.

“The DOD plans on transitioning all DOD medical facilities to MHS GENESIS by 2024,” said Emily Sarabia, 9th MDG training manager. “We are part of Wave NELLIS, which includes about 11 military bases in California and Nevada that will be moving to this new system in June as well.”

From June forward, Wave NELLIS patients will gain better communication not only with military hospitals and clinics but also with the Department of Veteran Affairs and civilian providers. Some other benefits for patients are secure messaging with providers and access to medical records through a portal.

“Back in my day I had to print and hand-carry all my medical records when I moved to my next base,” said Capt. Jeffery Martinez, 9th MDG MHS GENESIS project lead. “Our systems were in the past and we needed to revolutionize the way we do healthcare. MHS GENESIS will be a historic transformation in military healthcare.”
