Kunsan Air Base, South Korea - Planning and time management are important skills to practice to be successful in life, some people even practice these skills in recreational and creative ways with bullet journaling.
Senior Airman Oriana Beard, a broadcast journalist with American Forces Network, Kunsan, is a bullet journal enthusiast. Oriana has had an interest in bullet journaling since high school and has kept a journal consistently for the last three years.
Bullet journaling is a way of organizing thoughts, events, chores and memories that combines the practical use of a daily planner and the creative freedom of a scrapbook.
Oriana says that it isn’t just about keeping track of daily events and schedules, it also allows her time to decompress at the end of each day and organize her thoughts and feelings in ways that she enjoys.
“It’s definitely therapeutic,” Oriana said. “If I had to define what a bullet journal is for me, it’s just a way to have everything I enjoy, condensed into something that can fit in my pocket. I can use it as a sketchbook, as a scrapbook, a planner, journal or even a diary so it’s just everything in one place.”
Oriana has also found uses for her hobby in her professional career, creating entries for tasks completed at work as well as in her free time allows her to easily track accomplishments when it comes time for professional evaluation.
“It is super useful for work,” Oriana Said. “Especially when it comes to bullet writing because I can just go back and see what I was doing on a day, count up any tasks I’ve completed and have exact numbers. It’s just as easy as flipping through the pages.”
Bullet journals serve as convenient outlets for many types of creativity, from organizational skills like layout and design, to drawing and painting, there are many ways to bullet journal. Although Oriana spends a lot of time perfecting her pages, she encourages anyone to try their own style.
“There’s a lot of different types of bullet journaling,” Oriana Said. “The point of it is that it’s personalized to you, so you can get the most out of it. I think it qualifies as a bullet journal if you write a day and have bullet points under that day, then you’re bullet journaling and you’re good to go.”
