Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea - When researching the military before enlisting, there was one job that stood out among the rest to one particular Airman. He didn’t care how long he had to wait to ship out, he was determined and he knew he would be able to go above and beyond.

Senior Airman Jerreht Harris is a broadcast journalist assigned with the American Forces Network Kunsan. His job is to document events, news, and highlight personalities on base. The video products he produces go on to be shown on the AFN channels, shared on the base’s social media platforms, and occasionally picked up by local news stations.

“The importance of my job is passing along commanders words to all the airmen on base and to get information out there in an acceptable way.” said Harris.

The job of a broadcast journalist is also to help facilitate a good working relationship between the base and its civilian partners. He stressed the importance of making sure each subject of a story or video is portrayed accurately, so that those watching don’t end up with the wrong impression of the military as a whole.

“Appearances count for a lot because a lot of people don't know exactly what it is we do so they take what they see and they run with it,” Harris said. “They say not to judge a book by its cover but everybody does. You can't help it.”

His job can be stressful at times, making sure he gets enough footage to tell a story, working with other people’s busy schedules, and managing hard deadlines.

Technical Sergeant Neil Uranga, AFN Kunsan Operations Manager, spoke to the importance of deadlines.

“Deadlines are incredibly important in the journalism world, and in the military world as well. Everything has deadlines; EPRs, awards, decorations. They ensure that everything gets done,” said Uranga. Uranga also noted that Harris is consistent with meeting deadlines, and how that positively effects the mission.

Even with the stress of meeting deadlines each week, Harris takes the time to find value and enjoyment in each project.

“Every now and then a subject or individual that has a good story and you get to tell that in the best way that you can,” Harris said, “there's a lot of enjoyment in that for me.”
