The 124th Chaplain Detachment bid farewell to Chaplain (Maj.) Brian Oh during a Change of Stole ceremony Jan. 11th at Camp Humphreys, South Korea.

Transferring the Stole — a long, plain, black cloth worn around the neck — is similar to a command's leadership passing the unit's guidon during a change of command ceremony. The Changing of the Stole demonstrates the responsibility for spiritual leadership and pastoral care passing from one chaplain to another.

Chaplain (Maj.) Oh has served as the 124th Command Chaplain since 2015 and will be moving on to serve in the United States Army Pacific Support Unit (USARPAC-SU), located in Hawaii.

Present for the ceremony was the 658th Regional Support Group (RSG) Brigade Commander, Col. John Stibbard Jr, who oversaw the passing of the stole from the outgoing 124th Chaplain Detachment Chaplain, Chaplain (Maj.) Brian Oh, to Chaplain (Maj.) Myoung Lee.

"I am proud of this chance to serve," said Lee. "I really thank God for giving me a chance to serve God and country. And I think that I have a great chance to work together for a specific mission. I will do my best, with a sincere heart, to support the Command and Soldiers.”

Also in attendance for the Change of Stole Ceremony were command teams from the 658th RSG’s subordinate battalion and companies who traveled from around the Pacific to attend the 658th RSG Commanders’ Workshop in South Korea.

The Change of Stole Ceremony concluded with an invocation and benediction from the 658th RSG Brigade Chaplain, Lt. Col. Nam, who offered both prayers and historical context of the Change of Stole Ceremony.

The historical basis of the Passing of the Stole Ceremony draws its tradition from the Bible. Second Kings, chapter two, described the transfer of the spiritual leadership of Israel from the Prophet Elijah who passed his mantle to his successor.

The Passing of the Stole reminds all chaplains and religious affairs specialists of their calling to serve Soldiers and Families as servant-leaders. It is a time of recommitment to assisting Soldiers with their spiritual needs.
