    48th Fighter Wing

Secretary of the Air Force Barbara M. Barrett, visited Royal Air Force Lakenheath for the first time as the 25th SecAF, Feb. 13.

Barrett toured various 48th Fighter Wing work centers where she paused to speak with Airmen and reaffirmed their importance to European partners and allies.

“This place prides itself on excellence,” said Barrett. “It’s been performing at an operational tempo rarely met by others. It’s an extraordinary place that provides great leadership for the nation, the region and for the world.”

Just hours before Barrett’s arrival, Airmen of Liberty Wing completed a two-day bi-annual exercise known as ‘FURIOUS 48’, which focuses on preparing Airmen to meet any threat by generating airpower, and surviving in a simulated combat environment.

“The National Defense Strategy describes the importance of this region,” said Barrett. “Lakenheath is very well positioned for NATO allies and northern partners. This is a place where we work with one of our best and oldest allies, the United Kingdom. Friends who have been key to the United States for centuries.”

Though her tour was brief, the impact of RAF Lakenheath’s mission left a lasting impression.

“The mission gets accomplished by people who are dedicated to moving out smartly and getting things done quickly,” said Barrett. “We’re always looking for folks who can rise to the occasion, and the tempo here is demonstration that these Airmen are ready to perform the mission.”
