SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE, N.C. --

Team Seymour recognized four members for their selection of promotion to the rank of chief master sergeant during the chief’s recognition ceremony, Feb. 7, 2020 at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina.

Chief Master Sgts. Bobby Hines, Anthony Grubb and Richard Phillips were celebrated for reaching the highest enlisted grade of Air Force service members. The ceremony included a medallion presentation, saber arch, POW/MIA remembrance, candle lighting and a speech from guest speaker ret. Chief Master Sgt. Gerald Murray, 14th Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force.

“Being a chief is a foundation of modeling personal excellence, integrity and accountability. It’s the trust. There is nothing more important than your character,” said Murray. “There is going to be more sacrifice that comes along the way, but I’ll tell you if you do it right, there’s also great rewards.”

During the ceremony, nine rank insignia were displayed to represent each Air Force enlisted grade and candles were lit to commemorate the different milestones in a chief’s career. The Air Force promotes the top one percent of its enlisted force to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant.

“Even though you’ve culminated in rank, you have a responsibility to continue to learn and impart that wisdom to the Airmen who will look up to you,” said Col. Brian Montgomery, 4th Fighter Wing vice commander. “You now have access to any door you want. The challenge is to make sure we provide you what you need to continue to grow and development to become the best chiefs you can possibly be.”

The rank of chief master sergeant and senior master sergeant were created by Congress as part of the Career Compensation Act of 1958. It is their duty not only to enforce standards but by example, be the standard all ranks emulate - to care and guide our enlisted force while keeping the needs of the Air Force in the forefront. Congratulations to our newest chiefs!
