It can be stressful for someone to find that perfect dress.
Now, Moody has a fairy godmother with Cinderella’s Closet, located at the base Thrift Shop, allowing Airmen and spouses to rent dresses and accessories for free.
“Cinderella’s Closet gives individuals the option to rent a dress for free instead of paying large amounts of money for a dress they may only wear one time,” said Amber Perez, spouse of Lt. Col. Mike Perez, 23d Aircraft Maintenance Squadron commander. “The [local] area here is small and there are not a lot of options in formal wear. We are hoping by having Cinderella’s Closet stocked, we help lessen the stress of finding attire for an event.”
Starting back in October 2019, Cinderella’s Closet opened their doors to dress rentals and donations available to anyone with a valid military ID, focusing on providing the means to attend a range of events, from graduations to balls.
“Donations are continually coming in so the size variety will continue to grow,” Perez said. “We hope that our collection of dresses grows and that this program will be the start of something wonderful for years to come.”
Cinderella’s Closet rents out a variety of items beyond just dresses, from shoes to jewelry. Customers can pick the items they would like to borrow that are just right for the occasion. Although dress rental is free, customers are required to have the items dry-cleaned within two weeks of the time they rented out their items.
“Cinderella’s Closet is for [Team Moody] to use any time,” Perez said. “We want them to take advantage of this amazing opportunity to rent a dress for such a small [dry cleaning] fee and enjoy a wonderful event, be it a military one or a family wedding. We don’t want not having the attire to be an issue.”
For one spouse, Cinderella’s Closet provided the perfect dress for a wedding she attended.
“When I first heard about the Cinderella’s Closet opening, my brother-in-law had just asked my husband and kids to be in his wedding,” said Courtney Adams, spouse of Senior Airman Joshua Adams, 23d Aircraft Maintenance Squadron weapons load crew member. “I don’t own any dresses to go out, especially for a wedding. I had been looking around online but couldn’t find anything that would go with what my daughter was wearing. Finally, I decided to drive over to Cinderella’s Closet one Friday and see if I could find anything there. When I walked in, (the associates) were extremely helpful in asking me all the questions to find me the right dress, and I was able to find one that fit me. The dress was absolutely perfect for the wedding. I am so grateful to Cinderella’s Closet because without them I doubt I would have found the right dress.”
Perez expressed her gratitude for having the means to get that right dress for any occasion without breaking the bank.
“Having Cinderella’s Closet for our dress options is a lifesaver,” Perez added. “Especially for women who live on such a tight budget. I don’t have to worry about dropping $80 on a dress that will sit in my closet probably never to be worn again. As long as we are here at Moody, I will be going back to them for any formal occasion!”
