JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Whether a service member just moved out of the dorms and needs kitchenware or a maintainer needs a serviceable uniform item, the Airman’s Attic on the Joint Base Charleston Air Base may have just what they need.
Located at the corner of West Hill Boulevard and North O’Neall Avenue in building 1950, The Airman’s Attic and its volunteers strive to ease the process of setting up and maintaining a household by providing free donated goods to service members E-5 and below and their families. They also provide uniform items to all ranks.
“We’re here to help folks at many different stages in their military career such as people who just had a child or people who just moved here and need the basics,” said Lisa Dobbles, lead coordinator at the Airman’s Attic. “We don’t just help Airmen though, we help all branches.”
The Airman’s Attic is open from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. People wanting to donate gently used goods can drop them off in the reception area outside the building during and after business hours.
“Baby items are some of the most popular,” said Dobbles. “We try to keep things like baby clothes, diapers and the food pantry keep stocked. Rather than thinking of ourselves as a handout, we like to think of ourselves as a hand-up.”
With growing interest in the assistance the Airman’s Attic provides, the 628th Civil Engineer Squadron plans to expand the structure to have more floor space. The expansion project is slated for completion by mid-April. The Airman’s Attic will remain open during the renovation.
“We’ve grown a lot,” said Dobbles. “We’re all about getting the right things to the right people. We try to offer the very best stuff we can and the new renovations will help us further organize our growing inventory.” Dobbles said the staff at the Airman’s Attic can always use a helping hand.
