UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Rear Adm. Jamie Sands, commander, Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), visited the Pennsylvania State University Naval ROTC (PSU NROTC), February 4.

While at the unit, Sands had the opportunity to speak with unit staff and students and meet with the Senior Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education.

NROTC units report to NSTC, and command visits are an opportunity for professional development for the midshipmen as they interact with a flag officer, as well as a chance for midshipmen to ask questions about the program and the Navy. The visits also gave Sands a chance to hear about any concerns or suggestions from the midshipman and unit staffs who report to him.

“I’m glad our staff and students were able to hear all of the upcoming NSTC initiatives directly from the source. It was a unique opportunity that I know our battalion really appreciated,” said Capt. Wayne Wall, PSU NROTC commanding officer.

Sands spoke with the midshipmen about leadership, changes to the NROTC program to improve training, and the need for warfighters ready to lead the Navy and Marine Corps into the future.

“What really stood out to me was his three tips for success: treat everyone with respect, develop the warrior mentality, and ‘own it.’ I think those are great strategies to live by,” said Midshipman 1st Class Steven Nale, PSU NROTC battalion commander.

The Naval ROTC program develops midshipmen mentally, morally and physically, to imbue them with the highest ideals of duty, loyalty and Navy core values. The program provides college graduates an opportunity to commission as Navy and Marine Corps officers, who possess a basic professional background, are motivated towards careers in the naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character, so as to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.

Sands who, along with his headquarters staff at Naval Station Great Lakes, Illinois, and Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida, supports 98-percent of initial officer and enlisted accessions training for the Navy, as well as the Navy’s Citizenship Development program. NSTC’s support includes Recruit Training Command, the Navy’s only boot camp also at Naval Station Great Lakes; the Naval ROTC program at more than 160 colleges and universities; Officer Training Command (OTC) at Newport, Rhode Island; and the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) and Navy National Defense Cadet Corps (NDCC) citizenship development programs at more than 600 high schools worldwide.
