HOHENFEHLS, GERMANY- A group of Air Force Joint Terminal Attack Controllers participated in Combined Resolve XIII at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center at Hohenfels, Germany, Jan. 31, 2020.
Combined Resolve is a training exercise involving soldiers from 17 NATO allied and partner nations who work together during a month-long exercise and requires them to find solutions and overcome situations in a tactical environment.
Traditionally JTACs work with Army and Marine units and are responsible for calling in air strikes on targets. During this exercise the JTACs worked with U.S., allied and partner soldiers.
“Our sole purpose is to advise, assist and control,” said Senior Airman Elijah Bejer-Barro, 14th Air Support Operations Group, Pope Army Airfield, Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. “We advise the ground commander on the target set and what bombs or aircraft would be feasible for the commander to meet his intent.”
During the exercise the JTACs were required to navigate through the rugged terrain of the JMRC while carrying their communication equipment. They use their equipment in the field in order to communicate with their ground commander and air support in order to complete attacks.
“This exercise, compared to the one at NTC (National Training Center), really has us working a lot more with other countries,” Bejer-Barro said. “This is by far the biggest exercise with multiple countries, and we are just really integrating and working besides them. They are our partners and getting some training and actually understanding their TTPs (tactics, techniques and procedures) has been good.”
This exercise offered the JTACs the unique experience of working within a battalion-sized element. They were also able to work with members of allied and partner nation’s militaries.
“It’s my first time dealing with a brigade’s TOC (tactical operations command) and learning the dynamics of everything and how everyone is working together to meet the ground commander’s intent,” Bejer-Barro said. “That in itself has been great, and this has been a great learning experience.”
