SAN DIEGO – The Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs) Gregory J. Slavonic visited the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) to learn more about the ship's amphibious capabilities Jan. 30.
The tour was one part of Slavonic's weeklong trip visiting ships and bases in the San Diego area.
One area of focus for Slavonic was exploring manpower and policy issues affecting service members.
Slavonic, the 18th assistant secretary of the Navy for manpower and reserve affairs, retired as a rear admiral with 34 years of service after first enlisting in the U.S. Navy as a seaman recruit.
His responsibilities now include the overall supervision and oversight of manpower and reserve component affairs of the Department of the Navy, including the development of programs and policy related to active duty, reserve and retired military personnel.
USS Makin Island is in port conducting routine maintenance and training.
