On The Job- Network administration 0671

Have you ever wondered what those people were doing behind that window when you checked in at the G-6? Telecommunications Information Systems Directorate (TISD) is just one of the cogs in the great Marine Corps machine. Let’s go “on the job” with Cherry Point’s own.
There are six different jobs you can do in TISD; asset management, network administration, account management, telephone services, communication electronics, or work in the maintenance department. Today we are featuring network administrators Cpl. Riley D. Voyer and Lance Cpl. Leslie J. Gonzalez Munoz assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron.
Network administrators primarily push through system authorization access request (SAAR) forms for new Marines and Sailors upon arrival at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Cherry Point. They also make the email accounts for all MCAS Cherry Point personnel.
“We work with a lot of technology,” said Gonzalez Munoz. “If you’re not tech savvy it’s harder to learn this job.”
The network administrator military occupation specialty is knowledge based and a top secret job in the Marine Corps. MCAS Cherry Point only has one TISD on station. They provide information technology services to Marines or Sailors trying to connect to the internet. They also detect suspicious activity, suspending emails if necessary.
“I carry around a notepad to take notes there are so many things that I am still learning about in this job,” said Gonzalez Munoz. “It’s a never ending learning process.”
Without network administrators, no one would be able to create or troubleshoot accounts on the network. Any work done on computers would be ineffective and inaccessible.
“We use the SAAR’s as a record policy,” said Voyer. “They keep track of who has access. When we get inspected, we are able to keep them on the network.”
In the digital age that the Marine Corps is moving towards, a lot of mission accomplishment tends to be more on the non-physical side. Without network administrators computers would be useless to Marines.
“We provide an integral part of mission accomplishment for the base by providing Marines access to our networks so they can access their websites they need to complete in their day to day jobs,” said Voyer.
