The 18th Intelligence Squadron recently activated the 18th IS, Detachment 1 at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado on January 6, 2020.

The detachment will provide intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) to empower combatant commanders with increased and timely decision-making advantage in, through, and from the space war fighting domain.

"Standing up the Det. at Peterson was a critical move because we are now co-located with the operational Space units of the 21 Space Wing," said Maj. Kimberly Templer, 18th IS, Det. 1 commander. "We are part of their team and can provide them with unique intelligence support due to being a 70 ISRW unit. Space is a war fighting domain and cannot operate without intel, and it is critical to their mission success that we be integrated into their operations."

Det. 1 is postured to support the unique requirements of the newly-established United States Space Force, which the President signed into Law on December 20, 2019 as the sixth branch of the armed forces as part of the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act.

"I want Det. 1 to be viewed as part of the crew in the different Space Operations units and a bridge between the Space control technical experts, the joint warfighter, and the Intelligence Community," Templer said. "I want Det 1 to turn into a mission critical partner for operations involving the Space domain both in-garrison and deployed. I am most excited for the team to be fully trained up and certified to execute their missions."

Lt Col Amanda Werkheiser, Commander of the 18th IS, presided over the activation ceremony, where she appointed Maj. Templer commander of the new intelligence detachment.

Det. 1 is comprised of multi-discipline intelligence professionals with a focus on signals, electronic, and all-source intelligence that will support space electronic warfare and counter-space analysis. The 18th IS is subordinate to the 544th ISR Group, which is subordinate to the 70th ISR Wing.
