HOHENFELS, Germany –The Commanding General of 1st Cavalry Division, of Fort Hood, Texas, Maj. Gen. Jeff Broadwater, visited his Soldiers in Germany on their first full day of Combined Resolve XIII training on Jan. 25, 2020.

Combined Resolve XIII is a Headquarters Department of the Army directed Multinational Unified Land Operation event that exercises the U.S Regionally Aligned Force Brigade in support of European Commands (EUCOM) objectives.

This exercise allows U.S. forces to demonstrate their ability to fight and win against an equally capable force, along with allies and partners in the European theater. It is a fundamental exercise for rotational units supporting U.S. Army Europe.

"The biggest challenge is always logistics, trying to maintain themselves their equipment and their Soldiers over the distances that they've gone. They come here, they form this team with multiple nations, and then they have to sustain that formation over time, over this environment that they're in," said Broadwater. "It's 17 degrees today, right? So, they have the environment that they have to work through, different languages to work through, and really kind of sustain that formation to make sure that they continue to build combat power and that they're ready for any mission that they get.”

Broadwater spent most of the day 'in the box' visiting with his key officers and enlisted Soldiers on the ground.

"They're awesome. It's the greatest feeling in the world to be around all these young Soldiers each and every day, making a positive difference for something greater than themselves. It truly is a humbling experience," said Broadwater. "The last time that I was here in Hohenfels I was as a Lieutenant. I think that was 1994. I can remember it just like it was yesterday, kind of maneuvering through here with my scout platoon. It's a great experience."

Combined Resolve XIII allows military leadership to assess and increase the military readiness and lethality of all the joint participants. Combining forces on such an enormous scale showcases our interoperability, and promotes regional stability, thereby enhancing relationships between the allied and partnered militaries.

Broadwater also spent time with 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Brigade Commander, Col. Jeremy Wilson, who provided him with updates from the field. Wilson is about to lead his Soldiers into battle against the opposing forces.

"It offers us the opportunity to train across a full spectrum of operations, and working with our partners and allies we have a chance to leverage a lot of their expertise as well while operating within the theater, so it makes us a more flexible, combined force to deploy anywhere in the world," said Wilson.

Combined Resolve XIII is now active and runs through February 5.
