Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), Alaska, hosted the 2020 Commander in Chief’s Installation Excellence Award (CINC IEA) selection board for a site inspection Jan. 12 through 15, 2020.
According to the CINC IEA fact sheet, then-President Ronald Reagan instituted the award in 1985 to recognize innovation and superior operation of military installations that have best used their resources to support the mission.
Each military service competes for its respective branch’s award, with JBER competing as a finalist against Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, in the Air Force division.
“As one of the most strategically located military installations, JBER itself is a weapons system projecting power and pacing a host of Department of Defense missions,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Patricia Csànk, 673d Air Base Wing and JBER commander.
The CINC IEA board, consisting of five senior leaders from across the Air Force, visited for four days to evaluate multiple highly innovative units that display JBER’s quality-of-life improvements, green initiatives and innovative programs.
This allowed JBER’s motto of “Arctic Tough, Family Strong!” to show, through demonstrations of the Air Force’s strong partnerships with the Army on the joint installation.
“The 673d Air Base Wing enables and sustains lethality by being mission-ready, caring for our people, empowering strong squadrons and being trusted partners,” Csànk said. “We do this better than anyone.”
Total force support with the 673d Air Base Wing’s mission partners allowed the installation to lead the way with innovative programs and partnerships to include experiments in cyber defense, the Air Force’s first Tactical Combat Casualty Care training program, research and development of a new logistics app for deployment processing, wildland firefighting partnerships, an Air Force Hennessy Award finalist food services program, and an Air Force Spark Tank finalist aircraft de-fueling hose.
By operating ground-breaking procedures, JBER has saved taxpayers more than $5,088,000 in the 2019 fiscal year.
As a finalist, JBER will receive $750,000 to put toward quality-of-life projects across the installation. The CINC IEA winner will receive an overall $1.25 million.
“I’m excited to partner with our community to see how we might invest the $750,000 we’ve already won as a finalist, and the additional $500,000 we’ll receive if we win,” Csànk said. “The installation’s top priority is quality of life enhancement for JBER service members and their families.”
Overall, as a joint installation with service members from each of the five military services, JBER demonstrated its readiness and how it is posturing for the future through its programs and procedures.
“I am extremely proud of our JBER team,” Csànk said. “Every unit and helping agency made JBER’s recognition as a 2020 Commander in Chief’s Installation Excellence Award finalist a reality.”
The results of the competition will be released in the spring of 2020.
