People notice when someone creates an inspiring vision of the future and then motivates team members to buy into and deliver the vision.

Peers commended Tobyhanna Army Depot’s newest supervisor of the quarter for her role in reimaging the public affairs office mission for a new generation by introducing innovative or different ways of doing business.

As the public affairs officer (PAO), Kristyn Smith leads a staff of 11 personnel and is responsible for branding and promoting the capabilities and accomplishments of Team Tobyhanna.

“Kristyn drives operations forward by providing clear direction to her team and ensuring our [Tobyhanna’s] story is made known to the world,” said William Ramey, Installation Services Directorate deputy director. “Often in the spotlight to coordinate command-level events, she remains calm, cool and collected, leading through adversity with courage, integrity and compassion.”

The public affairs office is tasked with developing working relationships with reporters, and other media representatives, maintaining a robust community relations program, keeping contact with other government agencies, and keeping internal and external publics informed on issues that may affect them. Public affairs and visual information specialists use a number of broadcast and print media platforms to share news featuring Tobyhanna’s mission and workforce.

Smith joined Team Tobyhanna 10 years ago while working toward her master’s degree. She attributes her success to working hard, focusing on training and education, and taking advantage of opportunities. Characteristics she cultivates in the work place.

“My biggest motivator is being the catalyst to the growth of my team and our mission,” Smith said. “Helping others grow, challenge themselves and be successful is so gratifying.”

As a champion of Tobyhanna’s strategic vision, Smith often works behind the scenes to improve processes and actively encourage other supervisors and employees to participate in moving the mission forward.

“Kristyn epitomizes our Army core values, particularly selfless service,” said Nicholas Caprioli, Resource Management Directorate director. “She is one of the first to volunteer to pilot new programs and develop plans to improve the business.” Caprioli also pointed out that Smith is known for her participation in a number of non-profit organizations that promote economic growth of Northeastern Pennsylvania.

At an early age, Smith’s parents encouraged her to be aggressive and go after what she wanted in life. The PAO admits that without persistent hard work and a desire to learn, she wouldn’t be where she is today.

“I think everyone should take chances. Be courageous,” Smith said. “Don’t be afraid to push yourself to exceed the status quo. Only then will you see progress, change and ultimately reward.”
