HULMAN FIELD AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Ind.- Airmen assigned to the Indiana Unclassified Processing, Assessment, and Dissemination site at the 181st Intelligence Wing, Hulman Field Air National Guard base, Terre Haute, support Puerto Rico emergency efforts Jan. 10-16, 2019.
Puerto Rico is in a recovery state following multiple earthquakes and aftershocks, which impacted infrastructure and the ability to transport resources and aid throughout the areas in need of help. Airmen assigned to the Indiana UPAD have assisted by producing products showing clear routes and points of limitation and damage.
Primarily, analyst identified clear traffic control points to direct emergency vehicles throughout the area, said Master Sgt. Michael Warner, the noncommissioned officer in charge of the Indiana UPAD site.
The analysts at the Indiana UPAD collaborated with the Maryland UPAD to locate and assess locations for emergency personnel to establish staging areas and temporary housing for displaced citizens.
Liquefaction was a large concern when choosing these locations. Liquefaction is when the soil moisture content is combined with movement caused by the earthquakes, which reduces strength and stiffness of the surface soil, resulting in buildings or other structures to sink into the ground, explained Technical Sgt. Keaton Robertson, a supervisor with the Indiana UPAD site.
The Indiana UPAD is located on the same base as the 181st Intelligence Group, where Airmen perform active Air Force missions around the world.
The Indiana UPAD produced close to 50 products that were published to a central location for emergency personnel to access from anywhere in the world.
