The 22nd Contracting Squadron was recently awarded the Air Force’s 2019 Outstanding Operational Contracting Unit. Maj. Michael Mealiff, 22nd CONS commander, credited the award to the connectivity of the men and women of 22nd CONS.
The award is presented annually to the best contracting unit in the Air Force. The 22nd CONS competed in the “Small Category” against 74 other small contracting units in the Air Force. They have won the award once before — 20 years ago.
“The people of 22nd CONS are truly a family,” said Mealiff. “We all have our strengths and weaknesses, and how we all recognize and help those with weaknesses is what truly formulates a successful and productive unit.”
From Oct. 2018 to Sep. 2019, the unit successfully acquisitioned contracts to integrate the next-generation mobility platform, the KC-46A Pegasus. While integrating the new aircraft, 22nd CONS successfully obtained and completed contracts that would not only help McConnell but Altus Air Force Base, Oklahoma; Pease Air Force Base, New Hampshire; Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina; and Fort Riley, Kansas.
“We were looking beyond our normal lane,” said Dennis Fry, 22nd CONS director of business operations.
Fry and Mealiff believe it was the ability of the unit to look “beyond their normal lane” that allowed the 22nd CONS to earn their recognition at the Air Force level.
As Mealiff thought about the award, he said it wasn’t just 22nd CONS, but rather the entire installation’s award.
According to Fry, 22nd CONS will continue to broaden their aperture when it comes to the rapid growing enterprise of contracting.
