Employees with the Air Force Research Laboratory Sensors Directorate (AFRL/RY) participated in the Generations in the Workplace course to learn about generational differences and enhance communication, Jan. 9, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.

Cynthia Patterson, an instructor with the 88th Force Support Squadron, taught participants about similarities and differences between each generation with hands-on activities and engaging anecdotes. This allowed participants to gain an understanding of changing demographics and its impact on the workplace.

“This course really helped me gain insight on how different generations process information,” said Lauren Michalsky, the AFRL/RY Senior International Focal Point. “It made me realize that my strengths may not be the same as everyone else’s but we can use those differences to become a better team.”

Patterson taught participants how to effectively communicate with one another to promote teamwork and efficiently manage projects. She focused on the five generations present in today’s workforce: Traditional, Baby Boomer, Gen X, Millennials and iGen.

Simone Koram, the AFRL/RY Learning Officer, partnered with Patterson to provide this workforce development course to AFRL/RY employees.

“The intent here is to truly enhance and promote awareness,” said Koram. “We all have something to offer in the workplace and we want to foster a greater understanding of one another.”

Koram, a personnel psychologist with more than 30 years of experience in the government sector, brings learning opportunities to AFRL/RY’s doorstep.

“This course enhanced our employees’ development toolkit,” said Koram. “It helps to bridge the gaps between generations and helps us value what each generation brings to the table.”

The AFRL/RY Learning Office works to offer its employees valuable courses by gathering feedback through open discussion and climate surveys. The Generations in the Workplace course paves the way for innovative workforce development teachings.
