FORT GORDON, Ga. -- The year 2020 has hardly just begun and the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) Det. Fort Gordon hit the deck running, and is enthusiastically jumping feet first into training information warfare professionals for the Navy the nation needs.

More than half a dozen courses in cryptologic language and cryptologic equipment classes start in the first weeks of January. Additionally, the first Det. quarters of the year included safety stand-down training, and staff and students will also be training together on fiscal year 2020 General Military Training (GMT) during an all-day GMT-morale day later this month, complete with staff-led discussions and a breakfast spread sponsored by the local White Hats Association.

“We are starting off the new year using some of the best instructors in the Navy, training our reliefs in everything from GMTs to "C" and "F" schools,” explained Master Chief Electronics Technician John Dikun, CIWT Det. Fort Gordon’s senior enlisted leader. “We have new instructors coming in and being trained by CIWT domain Instructors of the Year. Leadership is setting a great precedence by starting 2020 off so enthusiastically with quality, timely and effectual training.”

The cryptologic language courses held at CIWT Det. Fort Gordon provide essential follow-on technical training for students who recently graduated from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California. The 2-3 months of intense coursework supplements what they have already learned, and prepares them for integration into one of the many mission sets around the globe. In addition to learning about the technical aspects of the job, students learn about their target sets more in depth so that they will enter the fleet as an area of responsibility subject matter expert.

Several cryptologic equipment training courses are also available at CIWT Det. Fort Gordon. They focus on maintenance and operation of systems ranging from submarine-specific cryptologic equipment to communications systems satellites and information networks operations and maintenance. Course lengths range from 3 days to several months, and are designed to integrate information about emerging technologies alongside standardized coursework. In an effort to streamline and maximize training time, plans to combine shorter courses are in the works.

As a training location for CIWT, CIWT Det. Fort Gordon delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services, enabling optimal performance of information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations. CIWT Det. Fort Gordon specializes in training to fleet Sailors in the areas of satellite communications operation and maintenance, maritime cryptologic systems operation and maintenance, and language training graduating approximately 225 students in 30 courses of instruction annually.

With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past three years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
