    USS Normandy (CG 60)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60)took part in a flag flying while conducting a port visit in the UAE on Dec. 25, 2019.

USS Normandy flew a U.S. flag previously flown over Normandy, France, the location of largest amphibious invasion in world history.

Chief Master-at-Arms Daniel Baraz, a member of Costal Riverine Group Two, Detachment Bahrain, contacted USS Normandy and requested that the U.S. flag flown at the site of the pivotal World War II operation also be flown by the namesake U.S. Navy ship.

“I am thrilled we were able to support this event. Being able to further the legacy of this flag is a fun and worthwhile opportunity,” said Capt. Chris Stone, commanding officer of USS Normandy.

Stone also thanked Baraz for his initiative in helping USS Normandy honor the heritage of an unmatched part of U.S. Navy and world history.

“Our team works extremely hard and being able to take part in a moment like this was really special,” said Baraz.

Baraz said it took a lot of work behind the scenes to make the moment possible and thanked everyone involved for their hard work. The USO in Jebel Ali acted as an intermediary and played an essential role in getting the flag to USS Normandy.

This flag has also flown over other notable military sites including U.S. Central Command and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

“This flag his been passed down through the Master-at-Arms community for a long time,” said Baraz. “I am not exactly sure where the flag originated or who the original owner was, but it has passed through many hands and traveled many miles.”

The flag’s journey is far from over as Baraz said he plans on coordinating for it to fly over the Indian Ocean, Germany and Arlington National cemetery.

USS Normandy, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, is deployed to the U.S. Fifth Fleet area of operations as part of a scheduled deployment.
