CANNON AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. - A former 20th Special Operations Squadron Green Hornet and recipient of the Medal of Honor, had a wall dedicated to his military accomplishments inside the 20th SOS building at Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., Nov. 26, 2019.

U.S. Air Force Col. James Fleming, a Vietnam War veteran, was awarded the MoH for his conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty.

The wall dedicated to him includes imagery of his MoH efforts, a portrait, the aircraft he flew and even a custom woodwork lettering design from a local artist.

Ret. Marine Glenn Russ, the local artist commissioning the wall, has served in the local community as a Curry County sheriff from 1998-2019 and now operates a wood design shop in Clovis. The 20th SOS commander contacted Russ specifically to design an addition to the wall.

“Lt. Col. Hamilton reached out to me and requested a sign to clearly designate the Medal of Honor recipient from the 20th SOS,” Russ said. “I was honored for the opportunity to build this piece for the unit.”

Russ’ customized addition, along with the 20th SOS efforts, aim to immortalize one of the squadron’s most decorated members which is an important part of Air Force tradition.

“Heritage, history and lineage are important to all personnel of the 20th SOS.” said Maj. Branden M. Witt, 20th SOS assistant director of operations. “Col. Fleming is a former 20th SOS Green Hornet and it is important that our squadron not only recognize his military accomplishments, but also highlight his service and dedication to our nation. The MoH wall will also serve as a constant reminder for all that view it that the 20th SOS stands ready to support and defend the nation with most professional and lethal airmen in AFSOC keeping in line with our motto, ‘When only the best will do.’”
