Are you looking for a civilian job, educational opportunities, or ways to access military resources like confidential non-medical counseling, as a service member?
The Rising Six Association of Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, hosted a networking event Sep. 14, 2019, on base for Airmen of all backgrounds. With a variety of community-based organizations such as the American Red Cross to Military One Source, the Rising Six Organization facilitated this networking event to help Airmen reach their educational goals, mental health resiliency, employment opportunities and much more.
One such Airman, Staff Sgt. Yahya Elgazar, a craftsman with the 315th Logistics Readiness Squadron, earned a bachelor's degree in biology, but despite his formal education, he has been in search of a decent job for nearly a year. This event helped him seek new opportunities and access resources he was unaware of.
”There are so many resources here that I haven’t been able to get access to on the outside, such as trade-school pathways,” said Elgazar. “These resources help with far more than just my military life.”
Additionally, the resource providers at the networking event offered outlets for educational pathways, such as Free Application of Federal Student Aid guidance, mental health counseling, tax preparation assistance and resiliency techniques, such as Veterans on Deck, an organization that targets stress relief through nautical experiences on the waters of South Carolina.
“College is not scary and we can help,” said Will Amos, program director at Trident Technical College and first generation college graduate. “If the community doesn’t help each other, the community fails itself.”
Being a veteran himself, Amos can relate to the military community’s needs, such as Kayla Clarke, outreach assistant with Military One Source and a Marine veteran.
“I can relate to all of the different aspects of military life and what they’re going through,” said Clarke. “I love giving back to the community.”
It’s a great opportunity for Airmen, said Tech. Sgt. Ashley Gilmore, Rising Six member from the 315th Mission Support Squadron, who helped coordinate the networking event that brought the support of the community and Reserve Citizen Airmen together.
One resource provider, Dr. Mamie Futrell, Sexual Assault Response Coordinator with JB Charleston SAPR, said, “we are here to listen, believe and support.”
