PORTSMOUTH, Va. (Dec. 19, 2019) – Naval Medical Center Portsmouth’s (NMCP) Pediatric Inpatient Ward received a welcoming visit from State Farm agents on Dec. 19.

The representatives delivered 100 Build-A-Bears to children throughout NMCP to give back to the ones battling illnesses, their siblings and visitors, just in time for the holidays.

“My daughter battled leukemia twice when she was younger and spent two Christmas holidays, back-to-back, in the hospital,” said Terry Friar, Portsmouth State Farm agent. “I remember volunteers passing out toys to the children who had to spend Christmas there. Build-A-Bears were my daughter’s favorite. When I opened my State Farm office in Portsmouth in 2016, I told my wife that I wanted to give back to the community as much as possible.”

Between State Farm agents, local businesses, and kind donors from the community, State Farm raised enough money to make just over 400 stuffed animals. Because they raised enough money to make so many, it was decided that the agents would donate a chunk of them to NMCP.

“We are a military community so I wanted to include our military families as well,” Friar said. “State Farm’s saying ‘Like a good neighbor’ is true. We love helping our communities and one another. When we all work together, it just makes the world a better place.”

As the U.S. Navy's oldest, continuously-operating hospital since 1830, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth proudly serves past and present military members and their families. The national acclaimed, state of the art medical center, along with the area's ten branch and TRICARE Prime Clinics in the Hampton Roads area. The medical center also supports premier research and teaching programs designed to prepare new doctors, nurses and hospital corpsman for future roles in healing and wellness.
