Story by Builder Second Class Bethann Crotchett
DIEGO GARCIA, British Indian Ocean Territory – U.S. Navy Seabees deployed with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 5’s Detail Diego Garcia began construction on a new dog run facility for the military working dogs employed by the U.S. Navy and British Royal Navy Dec. 2.
The facility is designed to provide safe-keeping for military working dogs, while the process of building the facility provides the Seabees the skills and technical knowledge needed through hands-on training for Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) and Major Combat Operations (MCO) construction requirements.
The new shade structure marks the third project the detachment has undertaken this deployment. Five members of Detail Diego Garcia are currently tasked with this project, which consists of approximately 1,100-square-foot of shaded structure.
"The whole concept of the project is a great idea. We're making things easier on the handlers by building a better structure to train and run the military dogs," said Steelworker 2nd Class Elizabeth Auten. "The end result will increase the security force on the base, while improving the dog's quality of life-and we get to see the dogs every day, which is a huge bonus."
In addition to the intense sunlight on the island, located just seven degrees south of the equator, the southern hemisphere is also currently in the midst of the rainy season. Despite its challenges, the project provides an excellent opportunity for NMCB-5 to further strengthen relations with the other services stationed on the island, as it requires coordination with Naval Support Facility Diego Garcia, Public Works Department Diego Garcia, Base Operating Support Contractor, and the British Royal Navy.
“I can’t wait to see it once it’s finished,” said Utilitiesman Construction Allison Legrand, currently on her first deployment with NMCB 5.
The structure is scheduled to be completed by the end of January.
NMCB-5 is deployed across the Indo-Pacific region conducting high-quality construction to support U.S. and partner nations to strengthen partnerships, deter aggression, and enable expeditionary logistics and naval power projection. The battalion stands ready to support Humanitarian Aid/Disaster Relief and Major Combat Operations throughout the region.
