(Newport News, Va) – Cryptologic Technician (Networks) Petty Officer, 2nd Class Chase Buchanan from Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command (NCDOC) volunteered several hours at the Yuletide Greetings Luncheon at Knights of Columbus, Newport News on Dec. 11.
Buchanan spent his time serving a holiday meal, passing out door prizes and gifts, and dancing to 1970s music with the guests, many of whom were decades his senior.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect at this event, but I was delighted that someone requested Sailors to attend. My simple presence and willingness to mingle and visit made the guests much happier than I could have anticipated,” said Buchanan. “Many of the elders shared stories of their spouse’s military service, and several women told me how much they enjoyed just seeing the Navy uniform again. I received more than one hug, and I felt thoroughly appreciated.”
The Yuletide Greetings Luncheon is organized by the Newport News Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department as part of the Active Lifestyles Program that began 35 years ago, and is an opportunity to reach out to veterans for community service.
“Although there were several community volunteers, I was the only service member who attended in uniform this year. I have shared how enjoyable this experience was with other Sailors, and I hope that more will volunteer next year” said Buchanan.
The mission of NCDOC is to execute defensive cyberspace operations and enable global power projection through proactive network defense. NCDOC reports operationally to Fleet Cyber Command / U.S. Commander, Tenth Fleet as Commander, Task Force 1020.
