NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland – Lt. Col. Thomas H. Edwards was awarded the Association of Military Surgeons of the United States (AMSUS) Research & Development Award on December 5, 2019, at the 2019 AMSUS Annual Meeting in National Harbor, Maryland.
Each year, AMSUS recognizes federal healthcare professionals for their significant accomplishments that have resulted in a meaningful impact on their mission or organization. The Research and Development Award recognizes an individual that has made a significant discovery or contribution in federal health research and development.
At the event, Edwards was recognized for his research with military working dogs (MWDs) that has the potential to significantly improve MWD treatment and survivability from combat-related trauma. His research is focused on canine coagulopathies, transfusion medicine, trauma, and shock resulting in multiple first-author publications.
“[Edwards] is a truly innovative thinker, advancing our knowledge on MWD trauma and developing new and adaptive ways to help canine soldiers survive battlefield injuries,” said Col. Dennis R. Bell, Veterinary Corps Consultant to the Army Surgeon General for Clinical Veterinary Medicine.
“Edwards’ efforts are changing the perception of MWD research throughout the military research community.”
Edwards is a graduate of the University Of Georgia College Of Veterinary Medicine, earning a Master of Science in Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences and is certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) as a Diplomate. ACVECC Diplomates are veterinary specialists who have undergone specialized training in the field of veterinary emergency and critical care.
Currently, Edwards is the Chief at the Research Support Division of the US Army Institute of Surgical Research in San Antonio, Texas. Throughout his time in the Army he has also served as the Branch Chief at the Public Health Command District Japan, Okinawa, Japan; Clinical Consultant at the Southeast Regional Veterinary Command; a Civil Affairs Public Health Veterinarian; and the Branch Chief at the Fort Huachuca Veterinary Branch.
Edwards has also been selected to chair the newly established training and education subcommittee for the Committee on MWD Combat Casualty Care under the Defense Committee on Trauma, also selected to lead MWD trauma interests on the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care, and Invited by the Marine Corps Special Operations Command to train their veterinary staff on MWD Trauma and the use of the Canine Tactical Combat Casualty Care (cTCCC) Card.
The AMSUS Annual Meeting is for military healthcare professionals and leaders to improve the effectiveness, cohesiveness, and esprit de corps of the federal healthcare services. This year’s meeting theme is, “Transforming Healthcare through Partnership and Innovation.”
