NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland – Col. John Staley was awarded the Information Technology (IT) Award in recognition of his significant accomplishment upgrading the responsiveness, safety, and efficiency of patient care by advancing medical logistics IT for both the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Veterans Affairs on December 5, 2019, at the 2019 AMSUS Annual Meeting in National Harbor, Maryland.
The AMSUS Annual Meeting is for military healthcare professionals and leaders to improve the effectiveness, cohesiveness, and esprit de corps of the federal healthcare services. This year’s meeting theme is, “Transforming Healthcare through Partnership and Innovation.”
At the event, Staley was recognized for his leadership and project management skills that led to the creation of both a bridging and permanent strategy to achieve Medical Logistic Information Technology (MEDLOG IT) interoperability with the DoD’s electronic health record, Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS. This allows the injection of authoritative product data into the patient encounter enhancing the accuracy of the data and enabling the (MHS) GENESIS item master.
He provided the required leadership to implement the adoption of the MEDLOG IT application by the VA healthcare supply chain. This included a pilot project at the Lovell Federal Healthcare Center and gaining the approval from the VA Secretary for enterprise-wide use of DoD’s MEDLOG IT application.
Staley also planned and developed the technical refreshment of the legacy DoD MEDLOG IT applications into a single, cloud- based application of all military and VA treatment facilities. This application is fully fiscally compliant and brings a much more intuitive, “Amazon-like” user interface.
Staley, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, attended Clemson University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He also earned a Master’s Degree in Emergency and Disaster Management from Torou University.
Staley has served on six operational deployments, from his first deployment as the Company Commander of Bravo Company, 32nd Medical Logistics Battalion (FWD) in El Salvador, in 1998, in support of Hurricane Mitch disaster relief operations to his deployment, in 2012, with the 1st Medical Brigade Headquarters in support of Operation Enduring Freedom where he served as the Executive Officer of Task Force Med-Afghanistan.
