Congressional staff members visit 403rd AFSB in South Korea

CAMP CARROLL, South Korea – A delegation of five staff members from the House Armed Services Committee Subcommittee on Readiness visited elements of the 403rd Army Field Support Brigade at Camp Carroll, South Korea, as part of a multi-day tour of the Pacific region in November.

The Subcommittee on Readiness has jurisdiction over Department of Defense policy, programs and accounts related to military readiness, training, logistics and maintenance, military construction, organic industrial base, the civilian and contract workforce, environment, military installations and real property management, family housing, base realignments and closures, and energy.

“A visit from members of the U.S. government is all about accountability and it’s also an awesome opportunity to show them what we do and how we do it,” said Lt. Col. John Ruths, commander, Army Field Support Battalion – Northeast Asia. “Anytime we get a visit like this, we want these professionals to depart with the confidence that we’re doing our level best to maximize readiness.”

The delegation received briefings on 403rd AFSB and AFSBn-NEA operations and toured unit facilities. In addition, the group learned about Army Prepositioned Stocks-4. AFSBn-NEA provides readiness to U.S. Army Pacific through the mission command of APS-4 assets located in Korea and Japan. The battalion receives, stores, maintains, accounts for, and, on-order, issues, APS-4 assets in order to provide strategic flexibility, support, and depth to U.S. Army forces.

The 403rd AFSB, headquartered at Camp Henry, South Korea, is a subordinate unit of the U.S. Army Sustainment Command headquartered at Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois. ASC, the control hub for global Army logistics, falls under the U.S. Army Materiel Command headquartered at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. AMC, a four-star command, delivers logistics, sustainment and materiel readiness from the installation to the forward tactical edge to ensure globally dominant land force capabilities.
