Story by Airman 1st Class Breanna Klemm

    97th Air Mobility Wing

The 58th Airlift Squadron and the 97th Training Squadron recently combined their efforts to present a new virtual, high-resolution, night vision goggle training system to instructor pilots and loadmasters, Dec. 9, 2019, at Altus Air Force Base, Okla. The current NVG training program consists of a series of power point presentations, followed by students monitoring a stationary 10ft by 10ft terrain board with covert and overt lights attached to it. This method has not received updates since the first day the C-17 Globemaster III Formal Training Unit arrived at Altus AFB. The new virtual NVG training system provides Airmen with a high-resolution, projector-based screen which almost directly replicates what student pilots and loadmasters can expect to see in the cockpit. This allows students to have a more hands on and realistic learning experience, preparing them for future flights in a wide variety of conditions. The new virtual NVG system is just the first of several initiatives in the 97th TRS to modernize and improve the already world-class institution.
