Members of the local community, spouses and Airmen from 49th Wing teamed together to bake, package and deliver cookies to Airmen living in the dorms, Dec. 9, 2019, here.
During the holidays, Airmen may feel isolated or homesick and the cookie drive is in place to remind Airmen of the support system around them.
“The Holloman AFB Cookie Drive is a unique event that allows the first sergeants, Holloman spouses, and our on and off base communities to make the holidays a bit brighter for Airmen in the dormitories,” said Master Sgt. Lillian Harbor, 49th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron first sergeant. “We team up to collect, package and hand-deliver over 10,000 cookies to our Airmen in the dormitories in hopes to ease the season for them.”
The elementary and middle schools in Alamogordo and on base crafted cards to be attached to the cookie bags, making each one unique.
“Receiving a bag of cookies is special because you know someone took the time to bake them,” said Airman 1st Class Jeremiah Arn, 635th Materiel Maintenance Squadron basic material maintenance heating, ventilation and air conditioning. “The handmade card completed the gift. In a time where you are away from your family, the little things tend to matter the most.”
The volunteer staff made 1,200 bags of cookies, 910 for the Airmen in the dorms and approximately 300 extra for the Airmen on temporary duty at Holloman – totaling to just over 10,000 cookies.
“Watching all the support for the Airmen (is the best part),” said Sarah Campo, 49th Wing Key Spouse and Cookie Drive event organizer. “The town really supports this, they look forward to it and they love supporting the Airmen. I would like to thank all the supporters, all the volunteers and everyone who baked cookies, because without them this event would not be possible. It really warms my heart that everybody wanted to help.”
