GREAT LAKES, Ill. (Dec. 6, 2019) -- Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) hosted the annual Holiday Extravaganza and Trees for Troops giveaway Dec. 6 at the Epicenter (Bldg. 525).

More than 160 fresh Christmas trees were given away courtesy of the Christmas Spirit Foundation and FedEx. In addition, servicemembers had a chance to enjoy free activities and food in the all hands entertainment complex, including free hot chocolate and cookies, taking selfies with Santa, and listening to Navy Band Great Lakes’ Brass Ambassadors.

Trees were given out on a first-come, first-served basis, so dozens of families were already lined up when the event started at 4 p.m.

“Overall we had Christmas caroling and an outside inflatable ‘snow globe,’ bonfire hot chocolate and cookies,” said John Prue, MWR Director. “Inside the Epicenter we had Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, a craft area, free bowling, vendors/sponsors providing free items and the Navy Band playing Holiday music.”

More than 375 people participated in Friday’s activities.

“This was another successful Holiday Extravaganza!” said Prue. “I think this is one of MWR’s best events of the year.  It is always great to be able to celebrate the holiday season and give out Christmas trees to military families here on base!”

According to their website, Trees for Troops provides free, farm-grown Christmas trees to armed forces members in all branches of the military and their families, through donations, sponsorships, grants and the work of many volunteers. Thousands of trees are donated by American farm families and the public, and FedEx delivers these trees to more than 70 military bases in the U.S. and overseas.
