GREAT LAKES, Ill. (Dec. 5, 2019) — Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL) celebrated the holiday season with a tree lighting ceremony Dec. 5.
Guests listened to Navy Band Great Lakes and the Training Support Center (TSC) Great Lakes Choir perform traditional Christmas music while the USO of Illinois served refreshments. Santa took a break from his Christmas preparations to visit the children during the ceremony.
“I like to take about the reason why we have ceremonies like this,” said Capt. Ray Leung, NSGL commanding officer. Leung gave a brief history of yuletide celebrations, going back to ancient times and all the way to the present day. He thanked everyone for coming to the event.
The winners of Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Holiday Card Challenge also were revealed. Earlier in the day, leadership from NSGL and TSC judged the cards that are arrayed around Ross Field, and were hand painted by Sailors and staff members.
People’s Choice went to USS Essex barracks; Best Holiday Theme went to USS England barracks; Most Military Pride went to USS North Carolina barracks; and Most Artistic went to Fleet and Family Support Center. The winners received a pizza and bowling party at the Epicenter.
The ceremony ended outside of historic Bldg. 1 with the TSC Choir helping Leung light the tree.
