FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Every year, December is full of holiday spirit, compelling others to give selflessly and come together to benefit their community. Soldiers, Morale, Welfare and Recreation personnel, Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers staff, civilian volunteers and FedEx employees all rallied December 6 at 8 a.m. to host the annual Trees for Troops event at Smith Lake Recreation Area.
Trees for Troops, a Christmas SPIRIT Foundation program, provides free, farm-grown Christmas trees to members of the United States Armed Forces through donations, sponsors, grants, and the hard work of many volunteers across the country.
“This is one of my favorite events to plan and coordinate, people love to receive the trees and start their holiday season,” said Jennifer Fayson, Fort Bragg B.O.S.S. advisor. “It’s great for the single soldiers of Fort Bragg to come out to volunteer as well, it’s a great way for them to give back to the community.”
Christmas tree growers have been providing free trees for military Families for many years. Since 2005, Trees for Troops has provided more than 225,319 Christmas trees to military Families and troops in all branches of the military at more than 70 bases in the U.S. and overseas.
Three-hundred and fifty vouchers were given to families of junior enlisted service members including some reserved for wounded service members and Gold Star Families.
This year over 400 trees were donated, with each tree a note from individual sponsors was attached. Volunteers even tied the trees to the roof of cars.
After 10 a.m. all leftover trees were given to Soldiers and Families without vouchers.
“I feel good dedicating time and effort delivering trees to lower-enlisted Soldiers and their Families,” said Sgt. Jordan Yang assigned to 3-319th Field Artillery Regiment and first-time Tree for Troops volunteer. “It puts a smile on their face strapping a big Christmas tree to their car and that brings joy to me; it really boosts morale for everybody.”
