FORT INDIANTOWN GAP, Pa. -The Pennsylvania National Guard’s joint staff hosted retired Lt. Gen. Reynold Hoover, formerly Deputy Commander of U.S. Northern Command and Vice Commander of U.S. Element, North American Aerospace Defense Command, now an adjutant professor at the U.S. Army War College, for a field grade officer forum Dec. 6.

The field grade officer forum is held periodically to provide service members with professional development lectures often from accomplished individuals and senior leaders.

Hoover spoke about his past assignments, with a focus on domestic operations, and provided leadership lessons and principles learned.

“All disasters are local,” said Hoover. “After we [military] leave, the community’s fire, police, and citizens will still be there. We are here to support them.” Hoover saw this principle many times during his career including during the responses to Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose, Maria and Nate.

Hoover’s lessons resonated with those in attendance.

“I valued this forum for several reasons," said Maj. Sam Herald, logistics officer with the Joint Staff. "The first was for the the information presented, and the second was the opportunity to interact with my peers.”

The forum was attended by members of the Pennsylvania National Guard’s Joint Force Headquarters Staff, Joint Staff and the 213th Regional Support Group.

The Pennsylvania Guard is one of the most deployed National Guards in the nation and headquartered at Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania. In addition to its federal mission, the Pennsylvania National Guard responds to domestic emergencies, working with its state agency the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, FEMA, U.S. Northern Command and dozens of federal, state and local agencies. The Pennsylvania National Guard maintains a joint operations center at Fort Indiantown Gap staffed by Pennsylvania Guard members 24/7 that support its domestic mission.
