MCCONNEL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. – McConnell’s everyday mission is not just reliant on Airman, but the support of the community. One of the ways the community provides support to the base is through the Honorary Commander program.

This program allows civic leaders throughout the local community to not only become informed on McConnell’s mission but also strengthens the military and civilian relationships. Team McConnell welcomed 11 new honorary commanders Dec. 4, 2019, at McConnell Air Force Base, making a total of 31 for units across the installation. They will serve a term of two to three years.

“We get to see what’s going on in the daily lives of Airmen, and then be able to translate it to the community abroad and that’s one of the roles we play as an honorary commander,” said Dr. Arlen Honts, 22nd Air Refueling Wing Golden Eagle and Air Mobility Command honorary commander. “One of the great things about being an honorary commander is that you get to listen and encourage your commander as they work with Airmen.”

Honorary commanders will have opportunities to participate in their units official and social functions, such as group and squadron events, awards ceremonies, change of command ceremonies and holiday parties.

“I have never seen a local community like this, it is tremendous,” said Col. Mark Baran, 22nd Air Refueling Wing vice commander. “We really appreciate everything you do and to let you know that this honorary commander program is special. It is not like this at other bases and you guys are what makes it so amazing.”
