REDSTONE ARSENAL, Alabama – The newest commanding general of the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command is also the Army’s newest three star general.

Gen. James C. McConville, Army chief of staff, promoted Maj. Gen. Daniel L. Karbler to lieutenant general during a ceremony in the USASMDC headquarters at Redstone Arsenal Dec. 6.

“It is a great day to be in the United States Army because we are going to promote the wonderful Army team of Dan and Leah Karbler to lieutenant general,” McConville said. “Very few officers make it to this level and we are so blessed he has taken on this mantle of leadership.

“Dan’s career is a remarkable list of superlatives,” he added. “If you look at his biography it shows he has been selected for the most challenging jobs at every single echelon. Dan is absolutely the right person at this time to take charge. We know you are going to do great and we want to congratulate you and Leah.”

During the ceremony, Karbler said it is an honor being promoted and that he feels privileged to serve. As the incoming SMDC commanding general, Karbler will serve in the position of the Army’s senior Air Defense Artillery and space operations expert.

“Thanks everybody for taking time to come out,” Karbler said. “I am really looking forward to working with the SMDC team and to continue working together with the U.S. Strategic Command team.”

Karbler thanked family and friends who traveled from Wisconsin and across the nation to witness the historic occasion, adding they are the biggest reason he is where he is today.

One family member who is continuing the family business of serving as an Air Defense Officer traveled from New York to witness the promotion.

“It is an absolute incredible opportunity to be here,” said Cadet Lauren Karbler, the general’s daughter and a firstie at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. “I am beyond proud of him. He has always been an incredibly great leader to me and a mentor in every aspect.

“He is definitely very inspiring to me and I want to do that same thing for people as an air defense officer,” she added. “It is a great day, I am so thankful for the support of our family and friends who are here today.”
