NEWPORT, R.I. — Keven Goncalves, of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport’s Undersea Warfare Electromagnetic Systems Department, has won the Legacy Award from the Black Engineer of the Year Award (BEYA) Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Conference. This special recognition honors outstanding technical professionals who are in STEM fields.
Goncalves, a resident of Brockton, Massachusetts, has been a NUWC Division Newport employee since June of 2016, supporting Electromagnetic Maneuver Warfare (EMW) Advanced Technology Development (ATD). EMW ATD efforts encompass research, design, development, test and evaluation of a variety of new and emerging technologies that can rapidly be employed to meet emergent needs of U.S. Navy platforms across all domains (air, surface, subsurface, manned and unmanned).
“Goncalves has not only been a significant contributor to these efforts, but he has also demonstrated the ability to understand the unique challenges presented in this fluid environment, adapting well to complete planned and unplanned tasking,” the award nomination states.
Goncalves is the team lead on several successful efforts, including:
Vigilant Hammer (VH) experimentation events, which are invitational events sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, that provide a venue for testing and counter testing an array of electronic warfare equipment and systems. Goncalves supported the initial outfitting for the VH event and took on additional roles in support of test planning and coordination of communications security material for the execution of the test event.
Mast Test Vehicle - a Navy-designed system that enables rapid, cost-effective at-sea testing of new Navy technology. Goncalves took over the effort for modifications to the system to include troubleshooting and required testing to validate modifications. He was the lead in developing the safety documentation and coordination with Division Newport for the approval.
Goncalves will be honored at the 2020 BEYA STEM Conference award ceremony in February, along with other winners from around the country.
NUWC Newport is a shore command of the U.S. Navy within the Naval Sea Systems Command, which engineers, builds and supports America’s fleet of ships and combat systems. NUWC Newport provides research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures associated with undersea warfare.
Currently celebrating its 150th anniversary, NUWC Newport is the oldest warfare center in the country, tracing its heritage to the Naval Torpedo Station established on Goat Island in Newport Harbor in 1869. Commanded by Captain Michael Coughlin, NUWC Newport maintains major detachments in West Palm Beach, Fla., and Andros Island in the Bahamas, as well as test facilities at Seneca Lake and Fisher's Island, N.Y., Leesburg, Fla., and Dodge Pond, Conn.
