Hundreds Compete in 2019 Fort Benning Multi-Gun Challenge

U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit

FORT BENNING, Ga. — The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) facilitated the 2019 Fort Benning Multi-Gun Challenge on November 14-17. The annual event was co-hosted with the Fort Benning Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (DMWR) and the Maneuver Center of Excellence (MCoE).

Over 280 competitors, comprised of some of the best multi-gun athletes in the Nation, put their skills to the test as they navigated through 12 stages designed, officiated and overseen by USAMU Soldiers.

U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. 1st Class Daniel Horner captured the High Military Award, as well as his second consecutive Tactical Optics Champion title. Horner, a former USAMU Soldier, won numerous titles during his tenure in the unit, and helped officiate several previous Multi-Gun Challenges. This was his second time competing since leaving active duty.

The High Law Enforcement Award went to Joe Farewell, a pro 3-gun competitor and instructor from Central Florida.

Dakota Overland, a 16 year-old Minnesota native, received The High Lady Award. Overland has been shooting 3-gun since 2015.

Despite having to borrow a pistol for the competition for unforeseen reasons, Jon Wiedell was the recipient of the High Junior Award. This is not the first time the 16-year-old Minnesota native has placed in a match with a borrowed weapon.

“There were a lot more physical challenges than I thought there would be,” said Wiedell during an online interview. “Other than the weather, I loved it.”

The Heavy Division winner was Illinois National Guardsman Sgt. 1st Class Jacob Blount.

The Tactical Irons Division winner was Texas native 19 year-old Riley Kropff.

“I always love when matches have shoot houses,” said Kropff in a Facebook post. “I really enjoy ripping splits and trying to be quick on my feet while moving through the houses.”

Kropff also stated that she hopes to return to next year’s competition.
