Service members aboard the Air Station may have noticed some little visitors this week, as the 2009 Lowcountry Cub Scout Day Camp kicked off June 15 and wraps up June 19. Cub Scouts from across the area trekked to Shady Point for a fun-filled week aboard the Air Station.
The Cub Scouts are the younger organization for the Boy Scouts of America and they come to the Air Station every year at the beginning of summer, once they're out of school, for a week of outdoors fun. The children venture here in groups, called Dens, from all across the Lowcountry. The camp lasts from June 15-19, 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
"The fact that they get to see all the different things on the Air Station is great," said Daniel Mooney, a Cub Scout sports coordinator. "It's convenient to come here and they always have a great time. Seeing the Marines, it gives them role models. We get to come out here and teach them core values like commitment, honesty and teamwork. I'm really a big fan of this program."
Children participated in various activities such as archery, sports, singing songs, performing skits, fishing and spending time in nature to build teamwork and build core values.
"This gives them a chance to earn many of their badges," said Heather Callender, a Cub Scout parent and volunteer. "It gets them outside for a week while working together and getting exercise, which is great. The best thing is that [the organization] makes it enjoyable for them, so they really look forward to it."
The children also participated in a special event every day shortly after lunchtime; they had the chance to drive three different Explosive Ordnance Disposal robots, visit the flightline, Starbase, and get hosed down by the base firefighters.
"It's awesome here," said Henry Manley, a Cub Scout. "I really want to come back here next year. I'm going to make sure I tell all my friends."
