Leaders from II Marine Expeditionary Force and the U.S. Navy’s 2nd, 6th and 10th Fleets gathered for Large Scale Exercise 2020 Warfighting Seminar at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Nov. 13-22, 2019.

The seminar focused on the future of II MEF and its close partnership with the Navy, as outlined in the 38th Commandant’s Planning Guidance.

“We’re bringing together planners from the key commands and this was a chance to back brief the commanders on situational awareness and build the warfighting capacity of all of the staff,” said Lt. Col. Josh Cavan, II MEF future operations planner. “Then we looked at how to apply that to the European and Atlantic naval forces looking forward to the future.”

Leaders also discussed naval integration and maximizing capabilities for future exercises.

“There are a lot of moving parts for this exercise,” said U.S. Navy Lt. Daniel Matthews, II MEF amphibious combat systems officer. “The Navy and the Marine Corps have different experiences to go off, so there are a lot of concepts to be tested.”

During the opening remarks, Lt. Gen. Brian Beaudreault, II MEF commanding general, stated that Naval Large Scale Exercise 2020 was not an exercise but a rehearsal.

“We are not just doing this [NLSE 2020] to check a box or demonstrate a skill,” said Cavan. “It’s to prove to ourselves that we can deliver on our promises and find out where we need to improve and not just go through a script.”

Cavan also said II MEF increased its capabilities by conducting this seminar.

“We’re better warfighters for having done this,” said Cavan. “We’ve learned more about each other’s capabilities and a mutual awareness on what we are dealing with.”

The Marines and Sailors will be executing Naval Large Scale Exercise in the spring of 2020.
