SUFFOLK, Va (Nov. 11, 2019) – Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command, Commanding Officer, Capt. Harold Cole, Naval Information Forces (NAVIFOR), Director of Fleet Readiness, Capt. Julia L. Slattery, and Second Fleet, Deputy Directory Maritime Operations Center, Capt. Christopher Slattery attended the Nansemond Suffolk Academy Veterans Day Celebration on Nov. 11.

The celebration event honored all veteran parents and grandparents of students with all branches of the armed forces represented and a special recognition to a World War II veteran and POW, Sergeant Robert “Jack” Ewald, U.S. Army.

U.S. Navy Officers, Captains Christopher and Julia Slattery were the keynote speakers and spoke about what service means.

“Service is choosing to give something without the expectation of something in return. It is about being a part of something bigger than oneself, and for us, it is about contributing to the defense our nation,” said Capt. Christopher Slattery. “Service doesn’t necessarily mean joining the military; it isn’t for everyone. In fact, post-9/11, service changed for us. It became personal, not just to us as a dual couple in the military, but to our military family since we have two children. We have learned that no one serves in the military alone. It truly takes a village.”

Capt. Julia Slattery concluded, “To our family, all the teachers and school faculty, and those in the community who provide support to our children, we thank you. Your support and what you do is so meaningful to all of us veterans who rely on you so much throughout the year. We could not do what we do without you.”

As the Commanding Officer of NCDOC, Cole represented both his command as well as the U.S. Navy. He celebrated with his wife, Heather, a teacher at the school, and their three children who are students of Nansemond Suffolk Academy.
