NSWC Corona’s Data Analytics Enables Navy to Dominate the Threat

Corona, Calif. – To fight the great power competition at sea and abroad, data analytics is what the Navy needs, and Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Corona has it. That was the message imparted by Capt. Khary W. Hembree-Bey, commanding officer of NSWC Corona, to members of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) San Diego Chapter at the group’s annual luncheon at Eagle Glen Golf Club, Corona, Calif. "We've been doing data analytics before it was a thing," said Hembree-Bey. "And we are a primary resource for the Navy for data science and engineering."

As the Navy faces ongoing challenges from adversaries, its leadership has emphasized the need to leverage technology to dominate the threat. For decades, NSWC Corona has served as the Navy's independent assessment agent, gauging the Navy's warfighting capability by providing analysis and assessment of fleet readiness and system performance and measurement accuracy to ensure the Navy's warfighters have the tools to train, fight and win.

As the Navy invests in technologies such as cyber security, unmanned vehicles, artificial intelligence, machine learning and digital twin, it seeks the partnerships of industry and academia to help achieve its goals. “The data is a conduit that helps the fleet better understand its readiness,” said Hembree-Bey. “You don’t just want the information; you want it to be predictive. We’re looking at the realm of what’s possible.” Private industry helps the warfare center meet more than $255 million in annual contracting requirements, with $84 million in small business contracts. NSWC Corona also partners with local universities and high schools to place students in internships and STEM positions, helping to bridge the gap between schools and industry. Along with a science and engineering workforce of more than 3,700 civilians, contractors and military personnel, partnerships with industry and academia enable the command to carry out its mission. “We are here to enhance readiness and lethality,” said Hembree-Bey
