    Defense Threat Reduction Agency

Nashville, TN –The Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) provided an overview of its efforts to detect, deter and defeat Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and High-Yield Explosive (CBRNe) threats at the 12th annual CBRNe World Congress and Exhibition in Nashville, Tennessee, Nov. 7.

The two-day event featured keynote speeches and plenary sessions that focused on merging civilian and military responses to CBRNe threats. It also included a workshop, which allowed subject matter experts to share insights, challenges, best practices, case studies and lessons learned.

During a plenary session titled “Building Partnership Capacity & Countering WMD with Allies,” DTRA’s director for Onsite Inspection and Building Partner Capacity, David Musgrave, stressed the role of partnerships to an audience that included representatives from the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other U.S. interagency partners, along with delegates and experts from more than 30 countries.

Musgrave also provided an overview of DTRA’s mission, highlighting the current threat environment and challenges we face. He focused on DTRA activities that illuminate threat networks, crucial to not only gaining a better understanding of the dangers they pose globally, but also to revealing their vulnerabilities.

“At DTRA, countering CBRN is deeply embedded in our mission of ensuring an effective strategic deterrent, and countering weapons of mass destruction, improvised threats, and their associated networks,” said Musgrave. “To accomplish our specialized missions we have developed a cadre of personnel who provide expertise in a variety of disciplines.”

Musgrave also described DTRA’s Building Partner Capacity activities, which build comprehensive CBRN preparedness structure, institutional capacity building, and coordinates with numerous interagency and international partners to bolster global counter proliferation efforts.

“We are dedicated to enabling our partners to join the US in countering WMD and improvised threats and associated networks of competitive powers, rogue states, and transnational organizations.” said Musgrave. “This approach expands our reach as a nation and provides increased safety to Americans and the rest of the world.”
